Review of The Namesake (2006) by Debie S — 28 Sep 2013
I saw The Namesake. I had recorded it from the Sundance Channel. It is about a family whose mom and dad immigrated here from a town with rich cultural and religious traditions. The main protagonists are the mom, who ages in the film from approximately 20 to 50, and her son (the older of her two kids).
Its a delightful (though not without very sad moments) coming of age story for both the mom and her son, with the immigration occurring in the 1970s and the town from which they immigrated being in India.
Even though the family is Indian, I bet you will be saying, "That's us" or "Just like what happened to me." There is even a moment when the dad essentially asks (while knowing the answer) the mom, (and echoing the question posed in the great American musical "Fiddler on the Roof,") "Do you love me.
" A beautiful movie. I give this movie a 10.
