Review of The Namesake (2006) by Jessica R — 12 Oct 2008
As with most adaptations, 'The Namesake' tends to bite off more than it can chew (or at least safely digest in what feels like a very long 2 hours). And it's no wonder - with a storyline spanning over 25 years, there's plenty of ground to cover.
A little too much. Which is perhaps what makes the cookie-cutter characters with their tethered dialogue that swings back to Ganguli's name in scene after scene more than a little disappointing. With so much that could be seen, explored, or discussed, it seems that they simply state and restate the obvious: that identity is a lifelong journey with little chance of boiling down to anything less.
