Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Matthew L — 28 Dec 2007
Great casting for the monks, face-wise if not acting-wise. Connery just does not exude the intelligence necessary for his role. The screenplay is one of the worst adaptations of a great book I've come across.
The mise-en-scene has no grasp of the nuance of period or politics that graced Eco's writing. The murder mystery itself is overcompressed to the point of incoherence.
