Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Vero S — 21 Jul 2009
If you see this move without having read the book, you might feel it is too long and a little bit confusing at parts, but once everything is explained, you'll really enjoy it. However, having read and studied the book, I was quite disappointed with this film.
First of all, the escence of William's character in the book is his line of reasoning, how one clue leads him to the next, how he always comes up with several theories to solve one mystery. It's fascinating, and it doesn't show in the movie at all.
What's more, they've changed so many things! Two very important characters don't even appear in the film, and everything that was sad or ugly about the ending they changed it into a happy movie one.
But it is an entertaining movie, and it does manage to reproduce some of the dialogues perfectly from the book. The casting is perfect, could not have been better. To any one how enjoyed this movie and its plot, the novel is much, much better.
Not a very faithful adaptation, but still a good, entertaining crime movie.
