Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Sally Z — 21 Feb 2011
Worth a watch if you like period mysteries, but I felt like it was less than the sum of its parts. One would think a still vibrant Connery, mixed with murderous monks, a gibberish speaking hunchback, secret passages, forbidden sacred texts, and a guy drowning in a vat of pigs blood would make for a hell of a movie.
..but it just doesn't quite come together. It's worth seeing just for the ugly character actors though...each uglier than the last. And F Murray Abraham's character has one of the great villainous names in all of literature.
..Bernardo Gui.
