Review of The Name of the Rose (1986) by Roland H — 26 Jan 2012
As wonderful as this film is, it is only better after attempting to slog though Umberto Eco's novel, of which it was adapted.
Biased in my own appreciation of the era and premise, it still offers the random viewer appreciable performances by a string of well known and to be well known actors. Namely Christian Slater, as the young Adso and who tale this is, but most impressively, Ron Pearlman, of the current Sons of Anarchy fame, delivers an amazing performace as Salvatore, a halfwit, deformied monk and one of two clandestine members of a heretical cult. Sean Connery is also stellar and won the Best Actors award for this role.
A keeper and the best reason to never read the book again.
