Review of The Naked Kiss (1964) by Daniel T — 06 Aug 2016
Samuel Fuller proves once again that he has style for days. He also proves once again that his films are undoubtedly his films. A model example of what a true auteur of film really is. The Naked Kiss is set in a universe that is strictly a universe that belongs to Fuller.
Where the only film playing in town is a film made by Fuller. There are no subtleties in this reference. Fuller is stating that he is God and his films are his creations. In this film, a prostitute makes an attempt to change her life.
To turn it around and go straight; however, she can't change. As she says, she never gives change. The plot centers on her struggle to prove to the town that, despite her dark past, she is to the core a decent person.
The flaw to this great film is that Fuller doesn't expand the plot enough to have a satisfying conclusion. The end feels rushed, which is a disappointment because it builds so slowly.
