Review of The Mummy (2017) by Julien D — 24 Jun 2017
The Mummy is neither great nor horrible. It is not as bad as many critiques have projected it to be. The Mummy is worth a watch if one just wants to see a stupid fun monster movie. It was an ambitious effort by director Alex Kurtzman to modernize and add to the now 85 year old franchise.
The Mummy provides an amusing trip to the movie theater but delivers minimal substance as an impactful film. Tom Cruise, however, gives his performance as Nick a great effort and succeeds with the direction he took it in.
The same is sometimes hard to say about the surrounding cast members. It is a promising attempt that could have easily been better with a polishing of the screenplay. Overall, The Mummy serves as a decent first installment to Universal's Dark Universe.
Rating: 3/5.
