Review of The Mummy (2017) by Luke A — 04 Nov 2017
The Mummy fails at being both a movie and the start of the dark universe. The script is atrocious, it feels like lots of separate scenes mashed together while trying to set up lots of future sequels that probably won't happen.
The acting is mostly all bad, Tom Cruise is surprisingly bland, bringing no charm to the character at all causing him to be rather unlikeable. Annabelle Wallis is awful and spends most of the film looking like a dear in the headlight, it's a shame because she can be really good as witnessed in the tv show Peaky Blinders.
Russell Crow is bland as Dr Jekyll and hilariously awful as Mr Hyde he sounds more like Ray Winstone than an intimidating monster. Sofia Boutella is okay but she's given so little to work with. This film is terribly directed by Alex Kurtzman with an incoherent plot, awful action and an abundance of unfunny comedy.
Also the film rips off countless better movies, mainly the fantastic American Werewolf London. The film isn't awful, it is entertaining and does have a handful of good moments but it's just so dull and a really bad start to the Dark Universe that might now be dead before it's even started.
D+.
