Review of The Moth Diaries (2011) by Heather M — 24 Sep 2012
Two years after the tragic suicide of her father, Rebecca (Sarah Bolger) goes to college with her best friend Lucie (Sarah Gadon), and she's put her past behind her - until the new girl Ernessa (Lily Cole) shows up, and seemingly wants to take over Rebecca's life.
First she takes over Lucie as her friend and then she influences Rebecca's other friends to leave the school, or some of them even meet unfortunate circumstances. Rebecca believes that Ernessa is a vampire and is trying to take Lucie away from her, and will stop at nothing to protect Lucie and herself, even though no one else will believe her.
This film is based on a book which of course I haven't read, but the movie I bet didn't do it justice. It was a typical movie with the typical problems - girl believes someone is a vampire, and no one believes her, saying she's jealous and envious of the new girl, etc. There were some pleasantly surprising moments and some interesting effects (the scene with Rebecca and Ernessa in the library for example), and the actors did fairly well, especially Lily Cole as the creepy Ernessa, she just has a face for that type of person. But the ending was so rushed and simplistic it felt like I was robbed of the time I spent watching it, wishing there was more, but finding nothing but closing credits.
