Review of The Monster That Challenged the World (1957) by Keith R — 09 Oct 2015
For a 50s monster movie, it's really not that bad. It certainly is on par or stands above even some of the others of the genre. The monster itself is one of the better ones from the time, with decent articulation (not very good, but for the time.
..) and plenty of slimy grossness. It is easily the highlight of the film. There's also an interesting beach scene early on that is eerily reminiscent of Jaws. On the surface, it seems to have a lot of good things going for it, but it's really just another monster movie.
That means people standing around talking about the monster for stretches until we get to more monster madness. When the snail monsters are attacking people, the movie is fantastic. But otherwise, it's pretty generic stuff.
I may have to give this another watch though as usually movies like this grow on me more with a second viewing.
