See it in Black and White, it helps sooth over the cynical idealism that curtails the experience from being just good hammy fun, but its still an entertaining experience that monster movie fans will find plenty to like.
The ending? Yeah, it fits to the themes of the picture that are a bit too serious for what it leads on.
