Review of The Mist (2007) by Shannon R — 20 Mar 2013
One good rewrite and this could have been a classic. Instead, it relies to much on familiar character types from dozens of other disaster films. Only Toby Jones really elevates his character at all. Still, Darabont's direction is focused and intense, and some of the scares work well.
The film succeeds mostly because of it's unwavering sense of hopelessness, which is fulfilled by what has to be the bleakest, most perfect ending to a Hollywood film your likely to see. There is also the joy of watching a religious fundamentalist get shot in the face, but that might just be me.
Good enough that I'd like to see the black and white version that is out there, and which Darabont prefers.
