Review of The Mist (2007) by Ernesto G — 09 Jan 2019
Too many reviews focus only on the political side of the movie, which would annoy roughly half of the potential audience, but it has a broader, all encompassing appeal. In modern horror movies, it's common to present a situation in which nobody can clearly understand what is going on (the Mist, Cloverfield, Bird Box, you name them).
Under those circumstances, how can the viewer accept that the lead character is really making the right decisions? Take Bird Box: how can a self absorbed painter that rarely leaves her studio make all the right calls to take herself and two kids on a two day boat journey to a place she's never been to, blindfolded, surrounded by death everywhere, and succeed? The Mist tackles the issue with more realism: we see the movie poster painter making calls on things he doesn't quite understand.
.. and failing over and over again. If you see The Mist under this light, it becomes intensely original and enjoyable -no matter what your stance in small town politics and religion is.
