Review of The Mission (1986) by Justin Z — 07 Jun 2009
A visual feast for sure. Beautiful cinematography, meticulous set design, fantastic costumes and a rousing score make this a wonderful art film. The cast is good if not remarkable, the direction is solid and the writing (for what little dialogue is in the film) is literate.
I guess my fault is in the sound design, since it would drown out the dialogue on many occasions. Also, the music had moments where it felt out of place for certain scenes. And your opinion of the movie overall will probably depend on how you accept the ambiguous ending.
Overall though, a superb filmmaking experience.
