Review of The Mission (1986) by P D — 02 Jun 2011
Recipe for an aimless movie, add one part Apocalypto, one part Seven Samurai, and one part Sister Act, mix in a handful of bad haircuts and pirate shirts, and top with one severely miscast Robert DeNiro.
Although the waterfall and jungle scenery are picturesque, DeNiro rides this film like the world's smallest unicycle. Between Irons and DeNiro, the accents were all over the place, should have added Cheech Marin, Ricardo Montalban and Arnold Schwarzenegger for complete accent bewilderment.
Additionally, the scope and storyline are too ambitious to develop a connection with the main characters as the historical depiction of the injustice of the Catholic Church unfolds. Watch out when the catholic big wigs dawn their silk slippers.
Recommended only for religious/historical drama aficionados or unobjective blind followers of Mr. DeNiro.
