The story of once blind Anne Sullivan, as she tried to teach deaf dumb Helen Keller to communicate. Rather than telling the tale through sloppy sentimentalism, Arthur Penn chooses a much more hard hitting and earnest realism to portray the painstaking teaching process.

He does so not afraid to use a hint of shock value and to let his scenes play out, a choice that adds power and realism to the film and each individual sequence. Power is also added by the great intensity of the genuine performances by Anne Bancroft as the teacher and Patty Duke as the deaf mute student.
