This movie is everything I ever wanted to see in a shark movie. I've seen a lot of shark movies, but I've also seen a lot of Shark Week. Having said this, I absolutely adored this movie shark - this movie shark never once acted like anything other than the animal it was supposed to be. It was not premeditated, or vengeful, or capable of out-calculating a human. This shark acted like a shark.

Did I like the rest of the movie as much as I loved the shark? Yeah! It was fun - I had fun. Look, I don't care for all these reviews saying The Meg is a bad movie in comparison to Jaws. Lots of fan favorite shark movies are bad compared to Jaws (Deep Blue Sea, anyone?) But comparing this movie to Jaws lacks an understanding of the difference in the genres. This movie is not an R-rated horror film. This movie is a glorious patchwork of genres - thriller, sci-fi and comedy - sometimes those combinations work, though sometimes they fall flat. That's okay though, because I loved that damn shark.

(Side note: I'm actually surprised no one has yet compared it to Jurassic Park rather than Jaws, since the themes and tropes are similar. Prehistoric animal? Check. Futuristic technology? Cute kid? Check. Rich investors messing things up for everyone? Check.).

New comparison guys: The Meg is Shark Jurassic Park. Go watch it - have fun. Live your life. Stay away from deep sea trenches. 'Kay, bye.
