Review of The Meg (2018) by Greg C — 10 Aug 2018
You get exactly what it says on the box. The interior sets and submersibles are OK for a $150mil budget. The deep water world of strange creatures is gorgeous. The 3D is notably weak. Statham plays a variation of the character that he always plays.
The main weakness may be the corporate cardboard construction of a movie purpose built to follow other "shark" successes for a specifically American, UK, and Chinese market. The premise of a high tech underwater science station in international waters makes it plausible.
The ham-handed introductions make it strained. It feels like a movie by a committee instead of the creation of a screenplay writer with a vision. By no means is this the worst movie in recent memory, but at the same time it doesn't feel like it was trying very hard.
The MEG knows what it is, and that is a movie with screaming extras and a computer generated shark.
