Review of The Marine (2006) by Max H — 30 Dec 2010
This film never raises itself above TV movie standards, and sometimes it lowers itself to direct-to-dvd standards. If you actually must watch a John Cena film, try and make it "12 rounds" rather than this... 'questionable' piece of work here.
John Cena doesn't have many lines, thankfully, as the guy couldn't act his way out of a paper bag that was open at both ends. He does make for a... LARGE presence whenever he's onscreen, and he legitimately seems like he could do the rather ridiculous things he does in the film.
Robert "T-1000" Patrick gives a fun, over-the-top performance as the main villain of the piece, and had Cena been a better actor there might have been a real fun rivalry, but Patrick is pretty much the only one here doing anything resembling "acting," and you can tell he's doing the best he can with a horrifyingly, terrifyingly weak script.
The character motives are as basic as possible. Greed for the villains, 'love' or perhaps revenge for the protagonist. The plot stops developing after the first 20 minutes, aside from one 'twist' towards the end. There are jokes, but the timing and delivery is so universally terrible its hard to tell them apart from the rest of the asinine dialogue.
All in all, its really hard to tell why this film was made. Its almost worth watching for Patrick's performance, and if you dig cheese and utterly mindless action, you can enjoy it.
