Review of The Manchurian Candidate (2004) by Gavin S — 23 Jan 2011
Well done remake of the classic Sinatra film. Denzel is great as Marco, transforming from sure of himself to completely doubting, to appearing as though he were insane. Liev Schriber steals the show as Shaw, and Streep is fantastically creepy in the role that Angela Lansbury creeped out with 40+ yrs ago.
Tweaked a little bit from the original in terms of ending and what's going on, but does a good job trading Cold War paranoia for War on Terror era similar setting. Well done by director Demme. One of the few remakes that had any reason to be retold, and also one of the few that still matters.
