Review of The Man Without a Past (2002) by Rowena H — 12 Feb 2008
A deadpan, darkly humorous film by the master Finnish film director Aki Kaurismaki.
The story of a man who is beaten up by thugs, after arriving in Helsinki.
In the face of an economic depression, he is forced to start all over again.
It is a film about hope, love and the power of the human spirit.
Aki's films grow on you.The eccentricity of the characters is charming, the dialogue (which is almost extinct) is endearing, and the deadpan acting is magnificently performed.
The messages and themes in all of his films are deeply moving, full of praise for the power of the human spirit.
Kaurismaki's films earn their praise.
