Review of The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) by Hugh O — 30 Jun 2009
The makers of this movie fought with the censors to get this one on the screen because of its gritty subject matter. This was the first movie to portray drug addiction -- think of it as the "Blow" of the 1950s.
Sinatra apparently went to a rehab center to study for his role as a man recovering from his heroin addiction cold-turkey and he hits the mark in his performance. Novak is also great as the 'other woman.
' Parker is OK as the wife but grossly overacts. The excellent jazz score really adds to the movie and helps build tension in a few key scenes.
