Review of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) by Simeon D — 09 Jul 2010
After seeing The Grapes of Wrath, How Green Was My Valley, and Stagecoach, I was sure that this was going to be another boring, overly sympathetic film from director John Ford; but man was this a great movie.
Jimmy Stewart does everything right, making this one of his most emotionally driven performances, and John Wayne (taking back what I said about him in Stagecoach) is magnificent. Vera Miles brings a certain hostile charm to the screen that completely works.
Lee Marvin and Edmond O'Brien were robbed of Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations; they were incredible! Way better than John Ford's other Best Supporting Actor winners in Stagecoach and How Green Was My Valley.
Though this isn't as visually driven as John Ford's other films, it definitely packs a lot of emotion and a powerful storyline. The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence is undeniably one of the great American classics.
100/100.
