Review of The Man Who Knew Infinity (2016) by John W — 15 Jan 2018
The movie, an overly dramatizes portrayal of the 5 years spent by the Indian mathematician Ramanujan at Trinity College, Cambridge, is interesting but somewhat tedious with excessive focus placed on mathematics and racism.
The movie takes many unfortunate liberties with the facts, for example implying Ramanujan was nearly destitute and unknown when he sent Prof. Hardy a letter filled with equations that led Hardy to bring Ramanujan to Trinity College.
In fact, Ramanujan had collaborated with various mathematicians, was published and had a research fellowship at Madras University when he was invited to Trinity College. It is a pity screenwriters are so quick to overly simplify the complexities of life, since it gives the many young people who learn their history from watching movies a false impression of history.
Jeremy Irons is outstanding as Prof. Hardy and Dev Patel does a reasonable job playing the role of Ramanujan.
