Review of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) by Blake B — 19 Sep 2007
70's Cheese aside, or all over it, TMWFTE is an awesome experiment in cerebral sci-fi adaptation with a knock-out cast captained by David Bowie on his first outing on the big screen. A wry and anxious Rip Torn does some full frontal in a sex scene.
Did I mention Bowie was in this? Nic Roeg delivers with a truely unique method of dirtection and editing scheme that create an unmistakable and inescapable atmosphere of visual delight and dread. Originally cut to the as then yet unreleased Dark Side of the Moon, you can taste the palpable influences of prog rock and, as always, Bowie's take on the main character of a Charles Foster Kain from a dying desert planet light years from earth seems like riding a bike for Mr.
Stardust himself. One of my all time favorite films.
