Review of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) by Stephen C — 02 Sep 2010
My personal fave of all the works in Nic Roegs canon and one that showed just how good a director he was.
Bowie is just perfect as Thomas Jerome Newton an alien who comes to rescue his dying planet but ends up succumbing to all the vices earth has to offer.
The film is a visual treat as Roeg combines sound and vision to give us a totally diffrent kind of sci Fi movie .
Candy Clark is great as The trashy Mary Lou,and Rip Torn and Buck Henry are fine in supporting roles.
But this is Bowie film and one can see where his Thin White Duke persona came from Roeg gives him chance to move around in his role and Bowie returns the compliment by being able to keep your interest sustained.
The film is also very funny in parts and of course there is the usual off the wall Roeg lovemaking scene.#.
All in all a film which you will never forget.
