Review of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) by Urban M — 23 Sep 2016
Yes, the structure is all over the place and the film makes virtually no sense, and I'll admit that not all of the surreal elements Roeg brings to the table work, which makes the film drag at times.
But many other, if not most choices do work, the film is shot beautifully, the score is great, the messages on the pratfalls of our society and alienation are solemn, but strong, just like the mood- and Bowie (RIP) delivers an incredible performance, carrying so much emotional weight with such a laconic character.
If nothing else, one has to admire a film that takes such risks in terms of its style going against all genre conventions.
