Review of The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) by Francesco M — 12 Sep 2008
Bizarrely great. If I had watched this five years ago I would have come away thinking it was pretentious faux-intellectual garbage. But it's actually quite excellent if one approaches it with a blank slate of expectations.
After watching it, I think Newton's identity is a lot more ambiguous than most interpret. The way I "read" the film, it seemed like Roeg was suggesting that Newton may not have actually been an alien.
Or maybe that's just how I saw it. In any case, this is a great film. Intensely lonely, visually interesting, and at times gleefully surreal (never thought I'd hear myself saying that).
