Review of The Maltese Falcon (1941) by Ryan H — 17 Oct 2008
You could probably count on the fingers of one hand the films that reach the artistic, dramatic and atmospheric pinnacles this one scales. It is so nearly perfect, from the meticulous composition of each frame to the tears in Elisha Cook's eyes as he is about to be used as a patsy is brutal and wonderful.
My one objection is that Bogart and Astor have no real chemistry, which makes their final scene difficult to believe.
