Review of The Maltese Falcon (1941) by Ashley S — 01 Jun 2010
This is the movie that set the standard for detective films and many consider it to be the grandfather of film noir...though noir buffs love to debate that. This is a gritty film - full of the tough talk Humphrey Bogart became famous for.
He's a private eye on a case - and we all know he's going to figure it out. He's always the smartest guy in the room, constantly taking the others down a peg...but that's ok, he's the one we're rooting for.
There's a damsel in distress, eccentric villains, a trigger-happy wannabe tough guy, the loyal secretary, pinstripe suits, guns and lots of smoking...good story and put together wonderfully. If you like detective movies, film noirs, great characters and witty wise-cracks, you'll like this movie.
