Review of The Maltese Falcon (1941) by Arun Lal P — 10 Nov 2010
What can you say about The Maltese Falcon? It's the granddaddy of all film noir and an undisputed movie classic. The plot is excellent and uses the MacGuffin device really well; Humphrey Bogart became Humphrey Bogart with his performance here; Mary Astor is great as a woman utterly full of deceit; Peter Lorre began his career as one of the most memorable character actors in American movie history; and Sydney Greenstreet became the archetypal fat, rich villain.
The dialogue is wonderfully hard-boiled. It's fast and efficient. It's really quite amazing.
