Review of The Maltese Falcon (1941) by Gavin S — 20 Apr 2013
One of the great thrills of cinema is watching a character-- whether good or evil-- be great at their job, and there's no doubt that Sam Spade is one of the best. With Spade, Bogie creates one of the most memorable antiheroes of all time by imbuing his nearly superhuman quick-thinking with a perverse joy that is both exciting and unsettling.
The rapid-fire dialogue is tremendous, the mystery is compelling, and the supporting cast is grade-A (and includes one of my favorite turns by Peter Lorre). The seminal detective movie.
