Most of the audience, and presumably the censor, interpreted Bogart's line about a "gunsel" to mean a criminal carrying a gun. Dashiell Hamett used the line in it's original sense -- "a young man kept for homosexual purposes.
" It's a dimension to the film that most people miss.
