Review of The Magdalene Sisters (2002) by Sooty M — 17 Jul 2008
This reminds of why I hate convents, nuns & teachers although the atrocities these girls suffered were far worse than what I experienced in a convent school. But there's no denying that the nuns were super-strict and often unreasonable: you had no say in anything even if you were sorely misunderstood. They were always right and you lived and breathed fear under their oppressive regimen.
This film incites deep anger, disgust, resentment. It is also an interesting foray into Irish culture from way back when the Catholic church was regarded as the country's highest moral authority. The Church essentially ruled the roost.
Fallen women (so to speak) or those suspected of having their chastity violated, were condemned to a life filled with such unspeakable cruelty as to justify suicide.
