Review of The Magdalene Sisters (2002) by Tibor B — 10 Mar 2009
Good drama about the emotional and physical cruelties experienced by four young Catholic women sent to a strict convent laundry house for alleged sins. The unnecessary, inhumane treatment of the girls is most tragically developed with the character of Crispina, and while the final heroic escape of Bernadette and Rose is a dramatic high point, the final freeze frame hints at the long lasting effects such repressive experiences had on these girls, and as the end titles explain, thousands of others.
Excellent acting and assured, sensitive direction by Peter Mullan.
