Review of The Machinist (2004) by Andy G — 17 Aug 2013
I imagine Christian Bale showed up to the first day of shooting and was ready to give a full-on performance, completely living his role as Trevor Reznick, a gaunt worker who's losing it (both the weight and sanity); the rest of the cast thought this was just going to be a sub-par suspense. The music can just cue any thrilling parts, right? Wrong.
The writing, along with acting, was sufferable. You cringe at the lines spoken ("Well, don't be surprised. Even a girl can scramble an egg.") as much as you do when you see Christian Bale's formerly fit physique (think American Psycho), now a scarily undernourished body.
Bale might have found he was leading a herd of horses with broken legs. He takes him and the movie seriously. You just wish everybody else did, too.
