Review of The Lovely Bones (2009) by Deepak C — 16 Jan 2012
Rarely does a movie take such a dramatic turn for the worse as âThe Lovely Bonesâ? does after the first 45 minutes or so. Peter Jacksonâ(TM)s film version of the bestselling book by Alice Sebold begins as a truly intriguing drama about an adolescent girl in a small American town where everything isnâ(TM)t as idyllic as it appears. After the first act the story turns into a supernatural fairytale that underscores, condescends and simply fails to impress. By the end everything has turned into a chaotic mess with ludicrous plot devices and dramatic manipulations.
Peter Jackson has spent time on adapting the screenplay himself, but has also employed two other screenwriters, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Perhaps this excess of writers is partly to blame for the outcome, as Jacksonâ(TM)s directorial style, as well as the performances of the actors, are rather solid throughout the flick. Itâ(TM)s a shame seeing good talent wasted on a project like this.
