Review of The Lovely Bones (2009) by Nancy O — 01 Sep 2012
The Lovely Bones is a film that starts off strong, but unravels as it continues. Jackson is obviously a talented director (that can be plainly seen with the stunning achievement that was Lord of the Rings), but this small and intimate story seems out of his area of expertise. At times I found myself wishing that he had embraced more of a "less is more" frame of mind for this film. Beautiful imagery is one thing, but if ultimately it leads to a film that over depends on metaphor/symbolism and a movie that doesn't always make sense, is it really worth it?
It is also worth noting that the cast is quite talented, and I had no issues with the acting in this film.
