Review of The Love Punch (2014) by Greg B — 25 May 2014
"The Love Punch" is a caper/heist film featuring the middle-aged pairing of Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson. They have "all right" chemistry, but the premise is squandered on hokey special effects and delivery of lines that make the leads look on auto-pilot at times.
The film just feels off-kilter, and this evidenced by the inconsistent pacing and its own lack of self-awareness. There are indeed moments in the film that induce laughter, but you will walk out feeling like something was off about the movie.
I don't think this genre suits either Pierce Brosnan or Emma Thompson well, and the special effects are so low-budget that they kind of detract from the storyline. This movie actually feels like a step-down from their usual caliber of movies.
There's nothing horrendous about the film; it just operates on a cardboard storyline that is never really brought to life. It was just okay to watch and will be forgotten in a week ------------------------------- C+.
