Review of The Lost Weekend (1945) by Trevor H — 05 Feb 2011
Considering the year and the censors' views to topics such as alcoholism, this was a brave effort from director Billy Wilder. The films charts a weekend in the life of Don Birnam, a down-and-out writer who's gripped by the bottle.
It won four Academy Awards including Best Film. The only criticism I have is the ending, and I suspect this was done to pacify the censors. Birnam suddenly cures himself and the film closes, whereas in truth, further misery would have unfolded.
It isn't as easy as saying 'no more drink', but still the ending doesn't harm the film too much.
