Slow, and not very riveting compared to his much earlier offerings. was it cos the film was predominantly in Tamil, centered around an (Indian) father and son, featured some shots of bustling Little India etc, that intrigued the Cannes judges?

It's always refreshing, and commendable, to use non-actors in a film. in this case, it was rather telling that the lead was a 'virgin'.
