Review of The Lost City of Z (2017) by Bill K — 02 May 2017
This is a ripping good old-fashioned adventure film, but it is NOT an action film. Theme, plot, character and atmosphere take center stage with blessed little use of over-amped, testosterone-fueled stunts or bloated CG effects to hold the audience's attention.
Based on David Grann's 2005 New Yorker article and 2009 book, this is a movie that respects its source enough to not trample it to death in frantic pursuit of box office returns. It also trusts there's an audience who will appreciate that, which is a considerable show of respect in itself.
Take your time, sit back, and be transported.
