Review of The Lost City of Z (2017) by Rubio M — 16 Oct 2018
Wow, this movie is absolutely terrible. A very confused plot line: he goes not once, not twice, but three times into the jungle, and each time it's all too rushed (months go by in mutes), and even has time to fight in WW1 before the final return to the jungle.
All the suspense is lost since it's basically the same thing each time: it's a really big jungle, really hard to get to, people die, there are some locals, he doesn't quite find what he's looking for.
It feels like it was trying to be Apocalypse Now, but where Apocalypse built everything up to the one final, monumental, beautiful and dark ending, this has no build-up, since he gets there 3 times at varying parts of the film.
Because of the3 journeys, each one is rushed. The 2nd journey even has a Kurtz-like character who controls a rubber plantation. They try to build him up as some demi-god, jungle baddie, but he's only in it for 3 minutes! This film is SO AWFUL!!
