Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by Rodney W — 19 Apr 2013
There is very little conventional about 'The Lords of Salem'. At its core, it is a thoughtful homage to the foundations of horror, a story filled with the genre's best tropes. It is the execution of that traditional horror story that makes the film so memorable and predictably beloved by cult fans.
It is a masterpiece of nightmarish surreality, offering a refreshingly occult atmosphere of doom and monstrosity. Of note is Moon's performance, arguably her most "real" performance to date.
The feelings she relays are both desperate and heartbreaking. Even with the film's obvious budgetary shortcomings, 'The Lords of Salem' achieves precisely what it shot for, a horrific experience gradually transporting the viewer into a menagerie of unearthly ghastliness.
This is one I will be watching repeatedly.
