Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by Da Z — 17 Dec 2016
If Lords of Salem proved anything, it's that Rob Zombie is a horror film aficionado. However, that by no means makes him a masterful filmmaker. Yes, he's had a good share of horror films--there are few contemporary horror films as disturbing as House of 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects.
And yet, Lords of Salem is far beyond that, and not in a very good way. It feels like a pseudo-edgy remake of Rosemary's Baby with the directing style of The Shining and the musical score of both.
Sheri Moon Zombie, who's fantastic in his previous films, lacks her crazed psychopathy in Lords. Her attempt at taking on a serious role as the victim is almost painfully terrible. Despite the film's blatant unoriginality, it's still an enjoyably dark and Satanic B-horror film for all Rob Zombie fanatics.
