Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by Marcel T — 18 Apr 2013
A Rob Zombie film is like a sledgehammer. No, more like a sledgehammer riding on top of a bulldozer carrying a chainsaw. It's in your face, gritty, and jam-packed full of as much gruesome gore as can fit into 90 or so minutes.
And that's what we expect. That's what we enjoy about them. They don't pretend to be anything but raw brutality. Unfortunately, Rob Zombie completely departed from that with The Lords Of Salem.
Gone are the fantastic deaths we know and love, and replaced with meager attempts at subtle creeping and tonal intensity. Sadly, though, Zombie is no Kubrick or Polanski, so the whole thing felt like a bull in a china shop.
Awkward, clumsy, stiff, and even laughable at times. Stick to what your good at - bloody dismemberments and creepy torture families. We'll all be better off. Still, though at least it wasn't boring.
