Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by Brandi A — 06 Mar 2014
I'm always game for a movie about witchcraft and covens, but I feel like THE LORDS OF SALEM was another draft or two away from actual greatness; there's so much good stuff in here, from the note-perfect, chilly, New England atmosphere, to Zombie's uncharacteristically strong direction, to the really unsettling and striking imagery that's frequently on display.
The movie looks great, and it has several sequences in search of a better story; therein lies the central problem: though Zombie spins an interesting yarn out of the classic tropes associated with witches, he throws in too much stuff.
The script is all over the place, overflowing with so many ideas that it never achieves any kind of satisfactory cohesion. Still, the high "ick" factor, the craft, and a fun supporting turn from Davison (who, in my opinion, should have really been the lead) keep this film from being a complete loss.
