Review of The Lords of Salem (2013) by Michael G — 09 Feb 2018
Zombie deserves credit for being ambitious and stepping into a different horror genre than his other films. Unfortunately the result is story that's big on vision and atmosphere but void of decent storytelling.
The characters, especially the lead (Sherry Moon Zombie) are shallow and vaguely written, you never get a sense of who they are. This causes the film to stumble along from one strange scene to another, and the climax is just so vague that it adds up to much ado about nothing.
Zombie nails the Argento/Roman Polanski/David Lynch vibe, if only his story had any substance to make it all stick, it would've been great. Judy Geeson, Dee Wallace and Patricia Quinn were great as the modern witches, but the rest of the cast made no impact.
Sherry Moon Zombie was miscast as the lead. She's actually been decent in other films, but here she just came across as an empty vessel with no personality. Ultimately the movie is a disappointment.
