A spectacular beginning to arguably the best trilogy in the history of film. Jackson begins this suspenseful epic aided by the beauty of New Zealand and a dedicated cast. He does fans of the book proud while still creating something unique rather than a pure retelling.
Take them as separate entities but be glad that the underlying messages are pulled through from book to movie, and done so spectacularly.
